Laughter & Learning:
Students Learn Through Improvisation Training

NIU Business Experiential Learning Center (ELC) students training with improvTwitter CEO, Dick Costolo, is no stranger to applying his improvisational comedy experiences to business. As reported in a 2012 New York Times article, "Those nights [on the famous Second City Chicago stage] taught Mr. Costolo a number of lessons that he now applies to running a company of 1,300 employees. He rarely uses the word 'but.' Instead, he says 'Yes, and ...' — an improv principle that allows people to discuss something without disagreeing." Mr. Costolo is also well known for focusing on being in the present moment, another skill he picked up from improv.

Acquiring skills like these led the NIU College of Business Experiential Learning Center (ELC) to hire Second City Communications to provide tailored training for its students. ELC students work with real businesses and organizations to tackle real business projects. "We brought on Second City Communications to provide our students with a fresh approach to refining their communication and interpersonal skills," shares Joan Petros, ELC Director. "It also served as a genuine team building workshop."
