Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About 'MEET THE INTERN” Night: November 5, 2008

What is "Meet the Intern" Night? When is it? What time is the event? "Meet the Intern" Night is a "job fair" event held each Fall exclusively for Accountancy majors who are seeking internships; employers who attend the event are expected to interview on campus for interns during December 14 - 18, 2009. This year, "MTI" Night is Wednesday, October 28, 2009. The Duke Ellington Ballroom in the Holmes Student center will be available at 5:30 for Intern Employers to set up their displays. The students will be allowed to enter the room at 7:00. We want to end at 9:00.

Is there a fee for "Meet the Intern" Night? Yes, there is an employer fee of $300. Checks payable to "Beta Alpha Psi" for $300.00 should be mailed to the Accountancy Department by October 23. Checks can be handed to Jim Young, Accountancy Department Chairman, on the night of the event.

At "Meet the Intern" Night, a student handed me a resume that I did not see in the "resume books" on Victor eRecruiting. Can I interview him or her? Resumes were posted on Victor eRecruiting by students who are academically qualified for an academic internship. If a firm receives a resume that is not in the book, please contact Tamara Phelan to determine if that student is eligible. If the student refuses to post his/her resume, an employer can not select that student for an interview.

We need interns for Spring 2010. Can I ask students at "Meet the Intern" Night if they would consider that option? YES!!! Such students would be interviewed on campus at any time during the fall semester; such interviews can be held on campus or at the employer site. Contact NIU Career Services' Carolyn Ramsey at 815-753-6208 to set up this job posting and interview time.

We need interns for Fall 2010. Can I ask students at "Meet the Intern" Night if they would consider that option? YES!!! Such students would be interviewed on campus during December 14 -18 along with the Summer 2010 and Spring 2011 candidates.

When does NIU need my list of students for interviews? Please select students for your December interview schedules, plus a few alternates, using the Victor eRecruiting system, by November 13, 2009. Once students are selected, they will receive an e-mail message from Victor eRecruiting that they have been selected by your firm for an interview. At midnight (12:01 a.m.) on Wednesday, November 18th, the students can choose specific interview time slots. Interview schedules will be "locked" by December 1.

A student told me that he/she will be unavailable for interviews during the week of December 14 - 18. Can I interview them earlier or later than that week? We strongly discourage interviews for Summer 2010 and Spring 2011 internships outside of the December 14 - 18 time frame. However, if a student has a reasonable explanation, we would permit an "exception" interview to be conducted during "Finals Week," December 7 - 11. Theses interview must NOT conflict with the students' final exam schedule and would be conducted at a time/place arranged between the firm and the student.

Some resume books have "Flexible" in the file name, what does that mean? There are a number of students who have not determined if they prefer a Summer 2010 internship or a Spring 2011 internship; they are interested in both, but can not do both. We felt that "flexible" was a preferred term to "Undecided."

Who can we contact with questions? Tamara Phelan, NIU Instructor and Internship Program Coordinator, can be reached at tphelan@niu.edu or (815) 753-6208.
