The Student Accountancy Society (SAS) at Northern Illinois University is a student organization that brings students, faculty, and professionals together. SAS sponsors various professional, community service, and social events throughout the NIU community. Most Wednesday evenings a professional organization, within the field of accounting, is invited to speak to the members about relevant accounting and business topics. Examples of subject matters include professional ethics, leadership and communication skills, business etiquette, IFRS and the changing global economy, and transaction services. SAS encourages members to actively participate in all areas of the organization, the Accountancy Department, and assist members in learning how to become student leaders of today and the business leaders of tomorrow. The members are made aware of the various career opportunities available in the accounting profession, such as Tax, External Audit, Advisory, Forensic Accounting, Internal Audit, Enterprise Risk Management, and Government Accounting. The speakers comprise of public accounting firms, including Big Four, Mid-Tier, and Small-Tier firms, Industry opportunities, such as John Deere and Caterpillar, and Government Accounting such as the FBI and IRS – Criminal Investigation. The members have the opportunity to gain a well-rounded education and attitude towards the study of accounting. SAS also encourages giving back to the community by volunteering at local nursing homes and animal shelters, donating blood, and preparing care packages for the Armed Forces soldiers fighting overseas. The organization also arranges social events throughout the semester to help the members enjoy a well-earned break by tailgating with a firm at an NIU Football game, attending a Chicago sporting event, or simply enjoying a bonfire with fellow members.
SAS is open to all declared Accountancy majors or any student who is interested in learning more about leadership, the profession of Accountancy, and the business world.
