2015 Event Recap

October 1, 2015

Morton Arboretum
This event was underwritten by Spear MC Consulting

On October 1, the NIU College of Business hosted alumni, donors and friends at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle. The event was sponsored by SpearMC, a consulting firm founded by alumnus Marcus Bode (B.S. 1993 ACCY). Guests were treated to presentations by Vice President Catherine Squires, Dean Denise Schoenbachler and 2011 alumnus: Joe Parisi, CEO of GuardLlama, an on-demand personal security system. Parisi graduated with an accounting degree and received his CPA, but his passion led him to start his own business after some encouragement from Dennis Barsema, Eric Wasowicz and Scott Kluth, all alumni who mentored Parisi.

Distinguished Donor Events are held at exclusive locations in the Chicagoland area. Each event provides College of Business donors -- who are members of the Dean’s Circle, President’s Circle and Founders Forum -- with an opportunity to network with fellow donors, NIU leadership, and hear from outstanding business people, like Joe Parisi.

1871, Chicago’s Entrepreneurial Center

Unique Space. Great Food. New Ideas. Cool People. What more can you expect from a NIU College of Business Distinguished Donor Event? On April 28, the NIU College of Business hosted alumni, donors and friends at 1871, Chicago’s Entrepreneurial Center. Guests were treated to presentations by President Douglas Baker, Dean Denise Schoenbachler and the main attraction: Howard Tullman, CEO of 1871. Tullman talked about how Facebook changed the landscape of marketing and sales by giving individuals an identity. Big data now drives what companies are doing, giving consumers what they want, when they want it and is moving past research to predictive behavior. More companies are creating loyalty models to generate communities for customers.  In return, consumers are smarter, bolder and willing to negotiate everything, expecting things on their terms.

First Division Museum at Cantigny Park

The First Division Museum at Cantigny Park is a tribute to all veterans who have served and continue to serve in the military. On November 20, 2014, in honor of Veteran’s Day, it served as the backdrop for a Distinguished Donor gathering of NIU College of Business donors.

Guests at the event enjoyed this unique venue and heard presentations from Dean Denise Schoenbachler and current MBA student and veteran, Nick Bender (2014 B.S. Business Administration). Nick is a decorated Marine Sargent who served for five years, including two deployments in combat zones.

Nick’s presentation highlighted the value of the scholarship program and what it means to veterans and their families. He described how, through the scholarships he has received in combination with his GI Bill, he is able to focus all his energy on the great education the College of Business offers. Without the generosity of the donors, Nick would not be able to achieve the lofty goals he has set for himself.  Read Nick's speech >

Nick closed by presenting an outstanding salute to all the distinguished donors as a thank you to those gathered and a tribute to veterans across America.
