Course Description: This experiential learning course is designed to give students the opportunity to practice actual marketing business skills while also developing practical team working skills. Student teams will have one week to perform each of five different marketing tasks. Students will be assessed on both team task performance and working in a team environment. All students will receive 1 credit hour and have the potential for also receiving a scholarship.

Course Objectives:

  1. To develop marketing business skills
  2. To develop team working skills
  3. To perform actual business tasks in an ethical manner
  4. To have fun

Overview: Students will be assigned to one of 4 teams. There will be two teams in two divisions (Silicon Prairie, Silicon Valley) competing for the first four tasks. Tasks will be assigned on Mondays at the Board Meetings. Teams will have one week to complete the task. Each division will have a winning team for the weekly task. Task performance will be judged by alumni CEOs and faculty advisors. One player from the losing team in each division will be fired each week. The fired student must meet with the faculty advisor for an interview within a week following his/her firing. After four tasks, the remaining four students from each division will form a team and compete for the final task.

Tasks: Tasks are assigned Monday evenings at the Board Meetings and are due on Monday mornings at 9:00 AM prior to the Board Meeting. No late tasks will be accepted – no exceptions!

Some tasks are judged objectively (e.g. how much was sold) others are judged more subjectively (e.g. advertising effectiveness). Tasks are judged by faculty advisors, divisional CEOs, outside business sponsors, and the MAC CEO. All judges' decisions are final.

Students should use their combined marketing knowledge and creativity in solving tasks. In all tasks, however, students must show that they are using ethical business behavior. Judges will consider ethical behavior when judging team performance.

Teams will be filmed during meetings and during task performance. These films will be viewed by the faculty advisors, and the edited version will be viewed by the CEOs and any MAC attendees.

Faculty Advisors: Each division will be assigned a faculty advisor. At least one team meeting must include the faculty advisor. Faculty advisors are also available for consultation but are essentially observers and will not assist with the task. Teams will benefit from consulting sources other than the faculty advisor.

Grading: Students who attend all class meetings will receive either a C, B, or A in the class. In addition, students from the final team in each division will receive scholarships. Grades and scholarships are determined as follows:

     Grade
Fired after first task:  C* (Two students)
Fired after second, third or fourth task:  B (Six students)
Final Division Teams:  A (Eight students)

*Students may opt to write a 5 page paper to improve their grade to a B. The paper must provide insight into the game and should include why the student was fired, what s/he could have done differently to improve their individual or team's performance, what s/he learned from playing the game, and how s/he will apply this new knowledge in his/her career.

All members of the final team from each division will receive a scholarship in addition to course credit and an A in the course. Each member of the overall winning team will receive a $1000 scholarship. Each member of the second place team will receive a $500 scholarship.
