The demand for high speed access is intense at most institutions of higher learning, and Northern Illinois University is no exception. To provide residence hall students with the technology needed to complete course requirements, and to prepare them to meet the future demands of a career, NIUtel, a unit of Information Technology Services, wired all rooms in the residence hall system for dedicated access.
Lincoln Hall access is via DSL service. Students no longer need to order the service and wait to connect. It will be ready when they move in - just "plug and play." In the fall of 2001, so many students took advantage of the DSL/dedicated access offering that NIUtel, the unit responsible for responding to the orders was hard-pressed to keep up with demand. Student Housing & Dining Services in cooperation with NIUtel decided to establish dedicated access as a standard feature of residence hall living.
All residents will be assessed $57.00 per semester for Technology Services on their phone bill. these funds will enable NIU to continue to provide a wide variety of technology services to residents, including dedicated Internet access to every room in the residence halls, as well as access from computer labs on NIU's campus, cyber terminals in the lobbies of residence halls, technology support from ResTech Help Desk, ITS Help Desk, and NIUtel, and telephone service in every residence hall room - where students enjoy a full range of telephone features.
