Social Entrepreneurship Program Provides Life Lessons Abroad
Contributor: Mike Cahill, Accounting Graduate Student

The Social Entrepreneurship Program at
NIU is the perfect fit for any business student
with aspirations to help make the world a better place. The mission of the program is to show students how they can apply their business

skillset to solve the world’s problems. Participating in the Social Entrepreneurship Program
was one of the best choices I made as an undergraduate in the College of Business because
it really helped broaden my horizons. Learning from real world examples is what I like most about the classes in the Program.

This past November, I enrolled in MGMT 411 – Microfinance as part of the Social Entrepreneurship Program. The class was unique in that it was a small group, (only about
10 students) and very discussion-based. We were assigned case studies to develop our knowledge of the topic, and at the end of the semester we participated
in a 4-day microfinance study abroad trip to Punta Mita, Mexico.

Looking at getting your MBA? Love to travel?
Study in Murcia, Spain!

NIU’s Fast-Trak MBA program travels to Murcia, Spain for six weeks of its MBA
curriculum. Students will graduate with both an MBA from NIU and a master’s
degree in international management from the ENAE Business School in Spain.

The study abroad portion of the program is designed to educate students about the
international marketplace. Students will spend most of their time visiting Spanish
companies and organizations and learning from their time spent engaging with
business people there.

Ann Carrel, Fast-Trak Program Director, describes the program as, “an intensive
immersion into business courses with an international focus, taught by international
faculty.” She says, “Living in and becoming a part of the local culture gives students
a flavor for what an expatriate experiences when taking an overseas assignment. The
hands-on, study abroad opportunity provides students with a better understanding of
the global business environment – an important skill set for future business leaders!”

As the name indicates, this program will get you on the fast track to obtaining your
MBA in just 12 months. Couple this with unique experiences abroad, and you have a
master’s degree in international management too!

All in a Summer’s Work – Marketing Professor to Travel to Romania, Myanmar, Taiwan, and Australia

There is nothing that Kohl’s Corporation Professor of Retail Marketing, Dr. Mark Rosenbaum, would rather do this summer than travel abroad to teach. He is doing just that with four meaningful trips planned May through August. Many College of Business faculty span the globe during the summer months to research or teach; here’s a peek at one globe trekker.

During the month of May, Dr. Rosenbaum will begin his summer teaching a services marketing course at the

American Hotel Academy (AHA) in Brasov, Romania. As a volunteer at the university
years prior, Rosenbaum helped the AHA develop into a leading educational facility. He
has also brought in other scholars to help the AHA prosper, and the school recently won
UK accreditation.

President's Circle Member Spotlight ~
Cynthia Crocker

Cynthia Crocker believes that everyone who has a dream should have the opportunity to pursue it. She also believes that education is a powerful agent for personal, professional, and social change. Those principles have guided her to change the lives of NIU College of Business students as a philanthropist, mentor, an active member of the NIU Foundation board of directors, and a member of the President's Circle and Founders Forum.

Although Cynthia may credit much of her early success to luck, you can see there is a lot less luck and a lot more heart in Cynthia's work today - and now NIU College of Business students are the lucky ones.
