Distinguished Donor Spotlight ~ Nancy & Raymond Powers
Their breezy style and big grins belie their hard work and dedication. Both Ray (ACCY '59) and Nancy (BSED '58) Powers are College of Business Dean's Circle members. They have been donating to the college for the last several years. "We wanted to give back because we received a very good education at NIU," Ray Powers noted, "and we know that the cost to attend now is more expensive than when we went." "Our goal is to help accountancy students fulfill their dreams through scholarships," says Nancy.
Having met in an evening management class, Ray and Nancy dated for two years before being married in August, 1959. This was soon after Ray graduated with a B.S. in Accountancy. While working his way through successful finance and accounting position's at companies U.S. Gypsum, Leaf Brands, Paper Mate , and Barton Brands, Ray obtained his CPA IN 1962 and his MBA at University of Chicago in 1969. In 2000, he retired as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Barton Brands.
Nancy taught Business Education at Serena H.S. and then Hinsdale Central until becoming a fulltime mother, raising 3 wonderful children.
Golf, tennis, volunteer work and grandchildren occupy their time these days. The couple still makes their home in the western suburbs.
The Powers would like to see their donations enhance the communication skills of NIU Accountancy students. "I've interviewed many job candidates" says Ray "who were technically very good, but had poor speaking and presentation skills." It is the "soft skills" he says that need development. It is the Powers hope that their funds will help develop these skills that are so valuable in today's marketplace.
