College of Business - NIU

Experiential Learning Center

Where the Classroom Meets the Business World

The College of Business Experiential Learning Center (ELC) connects teams of NIU students with organizations to tackle real-world business issues. From software evaluation to emerging market analysis projects, students serve as consultants addressing non-mission critical, cross functional business issues.

Throughout the 16-week semester, Business ELC teams are guided by a faculty coach and assisted by an organizational sponsor. To each unique project, teams apply the Business ELC project methodology, as well as the knowledge, skills and theories learned in the classroom.

For Students - A unique way to learn.

“I learned more in this experience than any classroom setting can provide. I would highly recommend it to anyone!”

–Christa Matsche, Employment
Forecasting Tool Project, Caterpillar, Spring 2005

Business ELC team members learn valuable skills difficult to master in a typical classroom setting. While working to address an organizational issue, team members learn and experiment with the project management, critical thinking and presentation skills essential for success in the business world.

In addition to earning 3.00 semester hours of credit, students grow as leaders, team members and subject matter experts. They gain a better understanding of communication styles and the knowledge and confidence to interact with peers, faculty and real world business professionals.

For Organizations - A fresh perspective.

“The NIU students we worked with were well-trained and very professional. They approached projects with an open mind and without predetermined solutions. Their consultative process and the recommendations they presented reflected their excellent training as well as their eagerness to learn and make a contribution.”

–Joe Hula, Executive Vice-President and CIO, Follett Corporation

Since the spring of 2000, Business ELC teams have provided a fresh perspective on 40 projects and measurable value for 23 different sponsoring organizations. By tapping into the minds of future business leaders and NIU faculty, organizations can gain insights and solutions to organizational challenges.

Recruitment of high quality students is an added benefit of sponsoring a Business ELC project. Students must apply and interview for a spot on a team, which means only the best and brightest are chosen and exposed to the sponsoring organization.
