Finance alum Ian Davis is profiled in the January 2007 issue of Futures in Finance under the headline: "Ian Davis: A CTM Success Story".


December 2006

In the latest issue of Futures in Finance published by the Association for Finance Professionals Norm Goldstein and the NIU Treasury Management course are singled out for having one of the largest CTM programs in the country. This professional field is one of the fastest growing in terms of job availability for new graduates. Thank you to Norman for his leadership in helping NIU to be way ahead of the curve in this area.


October 2006

The Department of Finance is pleased to announce the creation of the Dennis Dean Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded every year to a junior or senior finance major based on academic performance and financial need.


Kudos to Gerry Jensen for being cited in the Monday 10/2/2006 Wall Street Journal for his article "Gridlock's Gone, Now What?" in the Sept./Oct 2006 edition of Financial Analysts Journal. His co-authors were Scott Beyer of UW-Oshkosh and Robert Johnson of CFAI. MORE


September 2006

The Department of Finance is pleased to announce the creation of the Thomas L. Mann Endowed Scholarship for junior and senior finance majors. In accordance with the wishes of the donor first preference for this scholarship will be given to those finance students who are also military veterans. Applications for the first award of the scholarship will be accepted next spring.


July 2006

For the third year in a row the NIU Student Chapter of the Financial Management Association has received the Distinguished Chapter Award. This year less than 5% of FMA student chapters received this award. This reflects great credit on the students involved in the chapter as well as the academic advisor.

The Department of Finance is pleased to announce that on May 5, 2006, Nick Calamos, CFA, Senior Executive Vice President, Head of Investments, Chief Investment Officer of Calamos Investments will receive the College of Business Distinguished Alumni Award.

    Nick Calamos (MS, 1986) manages the Calamos Growth Fund which for the third year in a row has been named to to the Forbes Honor Roll of mutual Funds. (Forbes, 9/19/2005)

    The Department of Finance is very pleased to note that one of our alumni, Nick Calamos (M.S., 1986) will be co-hosting the CNBC Morning Show on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Nick is the Chief Investment Officer of Calamos Asset Management.

    We are pleased to note that Prof. Gerald Jensen has passed the Level III CFA examination and that he will soon be a CFA Charter holder. We are also pleased to note that Prof. John Banko has passed the Level II CFA examination leaving him with one exam to go before being eligible for the Charter.

    For the second year in a row the NIU Chapter of the Financial Management Association has received the coveted Superior Chapter Award. This award is given to only 8 percent of the FMA chapters each year. The credit belongs to the hard work of the FMA officers, directors and members.


    June 2005

    The Department of Finance congratulates Mark Galecki, Crystal Eaden, Zachery Albert, Karol Stankiewicz, and Kaushik Patel for passing the Certified Treasury Professional examination and earning the Certified Treasury Professional Associate credential. The Department also thanks Norm Goldstein for his dedication in working with these students.


    January 2005

    The Department of Finance congratulates the members of the 2004 Student Managed Portfolio team for achieving a return of 12.57% as opposed to the S&P 500 return of 10.88%.

    Kaushik Patel, Finance undergraduate student, had his paper explaining the Check 21 law published in the January 2005 issue of the TMAC News. TMAC is the Treasury Management Association of Chicago. Congratulations Kaushik!


    December 2004

    Scott Beyer has been interviewed on Rockford radio station WNTA and on the nationally syndicated television program First Business concerning the results of his paper with Gerry Jensen of the Department of Finance and Bob Johnson of CFAI entitled "Don't Worry About the Election, Just Watch the Fed" that appeared in the Summer 2004 edition of the Journal of Portfolio Management.


    November 2004

    We congratulate Ms. Michelle Apostol for being named a Treasury Management Association of Chicago Intern. Ms. Apostol will work with the NIU Director of Treasury Operations and will attend TMAC meetings. NIU is the only University in the TMAC program authorized to have two student interns per year.


    October 2004

    The Department of Finance is pleased to announce the creation of the William Wilbur Endowed Scholarship Fund. The Endowment was created in memory of long time finance Professor William Wilbur by his sister Alice. The first award will be made next spring.


    September 2004

    A recent paper co-authored by Gerry Jensen, Scott Beyer and Robert Johnson of the CFA Intitute on political cycles in the stock market was discussed by Robert Johnson on ABC news with specific mention of NIU as well as Gerry and Scott. Congratulations to Gerry & Scott.


    August 2004

    The NIU FMA Chapter has earned the FMA Superior Chapter Award for the 2003-2004 Academic Year. Only about 8% of FMA Chapters earn this award. NIU is listed on the FMA International website (www.fma.org) under Undergrad/M.B.A. Homepage. Congratulations to the NIU FMA Chapter.


    May 2004

    Congratulations Professor Bob Miller! Bob has been recognized for having the best paper published in The Journal of Financial Research in 2003. The paper, entitled "The Information Content of Calls of Debt: Evidence from Long Run Stock Returns," was co-authored with John Affleck-Graves. The award was made by vote of the Associate Editors of the journal.
