Historical Timeline

1951     NIU creates the Business Department with Dr. Francis Geigle as the appointed Chair. The Department is housed in the former WWII barracks at the corner of Lucinda and Garden Road.

1953     Department of Business moves from the barracks to Altgeld Hall.

1954     Dr. Robert Thistlethwaite is appointed Chair of Business Department.

1958     Department of Business moves to McMurry Hall.

1959     Department of Business splits into Department of Business Administration and Department of Business Education.

1961     College of Business is formed and Dr. Robert Thistlethwaite is appointed Dean.

1964     Wirtz Hall was completed & became new home to College of Business.

1969     Undergraduate business programs were accredited by the AACSB.

1975     James Benson was appointed Dean of the College.

1977     M.B.A. Program was accredited by the AACSB.

1983     The first personal computers were installed in Wirtz Hall.

1983     The Accountancy Program and the M.A.S. Program were accredited by the AACSB.

1984     Dr. Richard Brown was appointed Dean of the College.

1989     B.S.A. became OMIS

1992     Electronic podiums systems implemented in Wirtz Hall.

1993     Dr. David Graf was appointed Dean of the College.

1995     First College of Business web site was launched.

1997     Rockford Alumni Club was organized.

2000     Dennis & Stacey Barsema donate $20 Million to NIU. The plans for Barsema Hall take shape.

2002     Barsema Hall became the new home for the College of Business.

2003     The College of Business web site is redesigned to present a unified look.

2004     M.S.T. was accredited and all undergraduate programs were reaccredited by the AACSB.
