MAS (Leadership) Handbook


One of the most important requirements to be successful as a MAS (Leadership) student is to be informed. The Department of Accountancy maintains an electronic communication system that keeps you up-to-date with important information.

Accountancy Email System

The Accountancy Email System allows advisors and student organizations to send announcements about meetings, scholarships, internships, part-time temporary jobs, permanent jobs, and other important information to students.

You are automatically added to the Accountancy Email Group with your NIU email address. Go to http://webmail.students.niu.edu/ to access your Northern Illinois University email account. You will need to use your Z-ID number and password to read the messages. Check your email at least weekly, if not more often, as you will not want to miss important messages.

In addition, your NIU mailbox only holds a limited number of messages. If you forward your e-mail to another service provider, they may block mass e-mailings sent from NIU and you may not receive valuable information that can affect your academic career.


Almost every professor in the College of Business uses Blackboard. Blackboard is an internet communication device that allows professors to provide to students such things as the syllabus, class notes, and projects. It is important to check Blackboard for each course that you are enrolled in to see if there is work to be done for the first class meeting.

The Blackboard environment website is: https://webcourses.niu.edu. You may be prompted to accept a New Site Certificate. Follow the prompt for accepting this certificate. In the Username area, type your student Z-ID number. In the Password area, type the password associated with your Z-ID number. Then click Login. If you are greeted with a welcome page, you have successfully logged into Blackboard. The courses that you are currently enrolled in should appear in the My Courses area on the Welcome Page.

If you have problems accessing Blackboard, please call (815) 753-8100. The Customer Support Center is open 7 days a week. The phone line is open on Mondays –Thursdays from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., on Fridays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You may also email your questions to helpdesk@niu.edu.
