Why did you choose the Evening MBA format?
I chose the Evening MBA program because my wife and I were just starting a family and I wanted to be able to control how often and which day of the week I was taking classes.
How did the MBA program change you as a person and/or a professional ?
I never considered myself much of an academic, but once I was able to couple real world experience with academic discipline while in school, I gained a much greater appreciation for the value business courses provide. Having an MBA has given me a greater sense of confidence in my own abilities and solutions. If I didn't have an MBA, I might not feel as assured presenting my results, wondering if there was a key piece of information I haven't been exposed to. Having the MBA allows you to feel you are just as capable, if not more so, then anybody else.
What advice would you give to an aspiring MBA student?
My advice would be to really try and absorb the theories and apply what you are learning in practice. Don't get too hung up with being able to regurgitate information for a grade. It sounds simple but really try and learn. Also, if you have the opportunity to take Negotiations as an elective, do it. That and Organizational Behavior were two of the most applicable courses I have ever taken.
What are your current interests and hobbies?
Most of my free time is spent either coaching or spectating our three sons' sporting events. Our boys are ages 6, 8 and 10 and stay active with football, basketball, wrestling and baseball. Our family really enjoys beach vacations, and any opportunity we can take to get away and spend uninterrupted time with each other.
What blogs, magazines or newspapers do you read to stay up-to-date?
It's kind of sad to say put I hardly ever pick up a magazine or a newspaper anymore. Most of my research is online, I have found it helpful to sign up for email newsletters from traditional print media organizations such as Investment News, Financial News, Crain's Chicago, Naperville Sun, Bloomberg, Naperville Patch. I've also subscribed to several company emails that provide research, such as JP Morgan, First Trust (Brian Wesburry), Goldman Sachs, Eaton Vance and Genworth.
