We have 4-6 NIU-SHRM Meetings per semester. We notify members about these meetings through emails, announcements in Barsema Hall classrooms, and through our Facebook page (SHRM-Northern Illinois University). At meetings, we have speakers who are professionals in the human resource field. Most of them are NIU alumni!
Upcoming events:
March 22, 2011: The guest speaker for our next meeting is Grace Emery, Regional HR Services Manager for ADP. Grace currently manages the team for which she was an HR Business Partner (consultant). Her responsibilities include client retention, associate development, and all the budgeting and planning for her group.
April 15, 2011: The annual NIU Cares Day will take place on this day. Please help SHRM be a part of our school's community day. Any questions, please ask any Board Member. Registration coming soon.
Shadow Days are when we visit a Human Resource Department of a company and see the day-to-day operations of the HR department. During this time we "shadow" a HR representative and see hands-on what it is like to be in HR. We visit more than one company on more than one day and usually do this early on in the Fall semester.
NIU-SHRM Resume Online Resumes can be viewed online by employers and recruiters. We update the resume website frequently in the Fall and Spring Semester. There is no cost for members. However, you do have to be a member to have your resume put on the website. Mock Interviews prepare you for when it comes time to interview for a position. During your mock interview you are video taped (optional) and interviewed by a HR professional. After the interview is over, you are critiqued by the HR professional on "Interview Do's and Don't". These interviews are done during the Spring semester and you need to provide your own video tape. This is a good experience to see exactly how you look and sound in an interview.
Rockford Area SHRM Chapter 182, a local chapter of SHRM, has monthly meetings in Rockford where HR professionals gather and discuss HR issues. Meeting fees are $10 for students, $20 for non-members.
