Vol 2: May 2005
President's Report
By Frederick Hoyt
One of the joys of being president of MMA is looking forward to
the end of what one of my Senior Patrol Leaders refers to as (his) reign of
terror, and especially to the prospect of being immediate Past President.
We have experienced, as I mentioned in the Fall, major changes in our
organization--a new Executive Secretary and new newsletter editors, a new fall
chair, and (as always) a new spring program chair. Since then, we've had a major
overhaul of the website (thanks Karen James), and the MMA
Foundation seems to be-for lack of a better pun-on a solid foundation.
I noted that the continuities were equally evident-in seasoned officers who have
moved through the ranks, building on previous achievements-theirs, and their
predecessors. In particular, I would again
like to thank my predecessors, especially Brian Engelland, Bob Erfmeyer, and
Julie Toner, for their continued concern with and support for the organization.
It has been a special pleasure to have worked with Judy Wiles, who brings calm
compassion and professional prowess to the task of assembling a conference that
brings us to a new stage of excellence. One hundred and sixty nine names are on
the conference program, serving to advance the boundaries of marketing
knowledge. Karen James has ramped up the website and maintained it as an
invaluable (to me, and I hope to others) resource; and the publication council
and editors, who continues to reserve for us a choice spot for scholarship.
The reports from your officers demonstrate that this organization is still in
the hands of builders-we're financially stable and going forward with academic
and educational pursuits that are enviable. We will have the fall conference
sites planned for the next two years.
The reign of terror? As Sidney Carton said at the end of his reign of terror, I
think in A Tale of Two Cities, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I
have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go
to, than I have ever known." He was on his way to the guillotine. I'm on my
way to immediate past presidency, which is a far better rest than program chair
or president, but being president was one of the better things I have ever
done-and you all have made it possible. Thank you all for your help.
Respectfully submitted,
