Best Practices for Early Career Professors Consortium:

“Implementing the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education: Leveraging with Technology and Touch”

By Michelle B. Kunz

The second consortium for early career professors was a great opportunity for all of us in attendance to gain new insights, share ideas, ask questions, and leave the 2004 Fall Conference with renewed enthusiasm for teaching. I want to take this opportunity once again to thank all panel presenters for answering my call to present. I also thank all of you who attended the panel presentations, and hope you also found them useful, informative and beneficial. I shared some online resources for the panel members as they developed their individual topics, and thought other MMA members might find some of the resources helpful. I’ve listed

1. All panel sessions for this year’s consortium were based upon one of the Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education. The source of this original item is:

Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education. Chickering, Arthur W.; Gamson, Zelda F.; American Association for Higher Education, Washington, DC.; AAHE Bulletin, p3-7 Mar 1987 (ED282491) (ERIC-EBSCO).

2. I got the original idea to address the technology lever versus human touch from this resource:  Implementing the Seven Principles: Technology as Lever
By Arthur W. Chickering and Stephen C. Ehrmann, October 1996 AAHE Bulletin.

Citation: The article originally appeared in print as: Chickering, Arthur and Stephen C. Ehrmann (1996), "Implementing the Seven Principles: Technology as Lever," AAHEBulletin, October, pp.  3-6.

3. The TLT Group (Teaching and Learning Technology Group) has an extensive web site for the subscribing members. However, they also have some free online materials available at:  http://www.tltgroup.org/TopicsFreeResources.htm

4. Ted Panitz, a professor of mathematics and engineering at Cape Cod Community College, has launched a website that lists online resources related to the Seven Principles as well as Writing Across the Curriculum, Problem-Based Learning Strategies, and more. The link to his page is:  http://home.capecod.net/~tpanitz/

I hope you can take time to browse through these resources, and if you find additional items that are helpful, share them with the members of MMA. Thanks again to all presenters and attendees at the fall conference. As always, it’s one of the best meetings I attend all year. See you in Chicago, Spring 2005.
