Teaching and Learning Innovation through a Hybrid Class

By Rama Yelkur

This Fall I am teaching my first hybrid class. I’ve integrated into my traditional undergraduate International Marketing class virtual tools to encourage active learning by students. I primarily used Desire 2 Learn (D2L), a web-based learning system, to create a hybrid class.  In the past, I used web-based learning systems such as Blackboard, D2L or WebCT merely to post class material. In a hybrid class however, students actively participate in D2L discussions outside of class (of course they get credit), initiate conversations on current topics related to the class, ask their professor questions (which I respond to usually within 24 hours), collaborate in groups outside of class on case discussions and semester project, to name a few activities. It is one way of engaging today’s student in active and collaborative learning. It generates and enhances class discussion, increases student curiosity and shifts some responsibility for learning to the student.

I am able to better play my role as “facilitator of learning” as opposed to “deliverer of information.” It appeals to students as they are more comfortable with digital tools and are willing to engage in this method of learning to supplement and enhance traditional classroom learning. It does take plenty of advance preparation to create such a class environment, as one has to reevaluate the entire course design. It is also time-consuming, as it involves a variety of assessment and feedback methods as well as continuous interaction with students outside of class. I do think it is worth it; not only is it a refreshing change, it gets students excited about learning
