All graduating marketing majors are required to complete a student portfolio and turn it in to the Marketing Department prior to the last week of classes in the semester of graduation. This is a graduation requirement and you will not graduate unless you submit a completed portfolio.
The portfolio will consist of examples of your work from different marketing courses that illustrate your mastery of the eight learning objectives for the NIU Marketing Department. You will find a complete description of each learning objective and how it is assessed at learning objectives. Also available is the Summary of Class Assignments by Learning Objective. In each of your marketing classes, your professors will list the assignments that will fulfill requirements for any of the eight learning objective sections in the portfolio. Starting immediately, you will need to save assignments from your marketing classes so that you have the necessary documents to include in the portfolio upon graduation. The portfolio documents should be copies of your completed assignments; they should NOT be the original assignments with grades.
The portfolio you turn in to the Marketing Department has specific formatting requirements, which are described in the portfolio instructions. The Marketing Department will provide you with the required binder and dividers.
Your student portfolio will provide you with a significant competitive advantage in your career search. It provides concrete evidence of your skills to prospective employers. Based upon feedback from prospective employers, we suggest that you also keep your portfolio in an electronic version, either on a CD-ROM or a Web page. If you choose to use a Web page as your electronic portfolio, we recommend that you password-protect it so you can control who has access to it.
Please read the portfolio background information and instructions carefully. Before submitting your portfolio, please review the Checklist to make sure you have properly completed the portfolio. You should also consult the Submission Schedule, which has been distributed to all graduating seniors, to determine when your portfolio should be submitted. Submission Schedule is also available in the Marketing Department. If you have any questions, feel free to ask your professor or check in the department for additional details.
