The mission of the Master of Science program in management information systems at Northern Illinois University is to prepare individuals to make the most effective use of information technology in the solution of business problems. The rapid advances in the technology of information systems and the increasing complexity of business decision making have created a demand for individuals who are capable of merging effective business decision making with a unique understanding of information technology to the advantage of the business enterprise.
Information has become a valuable business resource that must be effectively managed in the attainment of company objectives. Information systems are the infrastructures and processes developed for managing this resource. The most effective management of these systems increases the likelihood that an organization remains competitive in today's ever-changing business environment.
The NIU management information systems program combines the technical aspects of information systems with the practical aspects of modern business thought. The program studies the technical areas of computer programming, computer operating systems, systems analysis and design, and database management and telecommunications systems in relation to the organizational areas of marketing, finance, accounting, operations, and human resource management. The uses of information systems in decision support and the development and implementation of management information systems strategy, which bridge across the technical and organizational areas, are examined to prepare information managers for the challenges of the modern business enterprise.
The science of information systems is explored through the study of significant management information systems research and the practical application of theory is demonstrated to students through intensive case analysis of real business problems. Many students gain exposure to the application of management information systems concepts by participation in professional internships at major organizations. An applied business program, the NIU M.S. in management information systems program is designed to meet the needs of today's business by providing managers with a unique understanding of the role and use of information technology in the competitive success of business organizations.
