Department Statement of Guiding Principles
In support of the College of Business mission, the OM&IS Department provides quality teaching, research, and business outreach activities in the fields of operations management and information systems by leveraging the integration of the student, business, and academic communities.
Department Objectives
Undergraduate Program
To prepare undergraduates to efficiently and effectively manage processes in today's global business environment.
We seek to achieve this objective by providing students with:
- up-to-date knowledge of operations management and information systems;
- opportunity for experiential learning both on and off campus;
- knowledge of and experience with process improvement;
- communication, decision-making, and technical skills as needed by professionals in the fields of operations management and information systems.
Graduate Program
To prepare graduate students to efficiently and effectively develop and manage information technology resources in today's global business environment.
We seek to achieve this objective by providing students with:
- up-to-date advanced knowledge of information systems;
- opportunity for experiential learning both on and off campus;
- knowledge of and experience with process improvement;
- communication, decision-making, and technical skills as needed by professionals in the fields of and information systems;
- opportunities to apply IS theories to support best practices in leadership, management, and strategy.
Academic Community
To conduct rigorous and relevant research in operations management and information systems, to disseminate the results of this research, and to provide service to the academic community.
We seek to achieve this objective through:
- publication in refereed journals.
- publication in books;
- publication in conference proceedings;
- presentation at conference;
- review of manuscripts for refereed journtals;
- review of manuscripts for conferences;
- service in other volunteer activities at conference (e.g., track chair, session chair, discussant) or service in other volunteer activities in professional organizations (e.g., division chair, division newsletter editor);
- service on Department, College, and University committees.
Business Community
To participate in research, service, and consulting activities, which benefit the business community.
We seek to achieve this objective by:
- involving students in research and consulting activities with our business partners;
- inviting business representatives to bring their experiences into the classroom;
- providing forums where businesses may involve faculty and students in specific problem resolution;
- seeking input from business partners when designing curriculum changes and enhancements;
- engaging business to support relevant faculty research;
- encouraging faculty development through business relationships;
- providing continuing education to the business community.
Faculty
To attract and retain collegial and professional faculty who excel at teaching, research, and business outreach.
We seek to achieve this objective by:
- providing a supportive environment, which expects professional success;
- providing world-class facilities for teaching, research, and business outreach;
- providing resources to faculty which meet or exceed those offered at comparable business departments of peer universities;
- defining responsibilities commensurate with those defined at comparable business departments of peer universities;
- providing ongoing incentives and subsequent rewards to encourage and achieve excellence in teaching, research, and business outreach.
Academic Advising
To provide academic advising to assist in the development and implementation of educational plans and career strategies for graduate students and upper-level undergraduate students.
We seek to achieve this objective by providing students with assistance in the:
- selection of appropriate courses and other educational experiences;
- evaluation of progress toward degree completion;
- awareness of available resources to enhance their education;
- transition from college to other experiences as a life-long learner;
- development of strategies and skills needed to attain their career goals.
