In poor economic times, many students graduate without having landed a position. Even in good economic times, there are lots of students who graduate without having accepted something. This predicament is NOT a poor reflection on the student. Finding the right match in a job takes time. The first offer(s) made may not be the position(s) for you.
If you find yourself in the position of looking for a job after graduation, here are some suggestions and resources to consider:
Finding a job is a full-time job! If you have graduated, you should be working at least 5 to 6 hours a day towards getting interviews and preparing for interviews.
Remember that the hidden job market can yield more positions than advertised openings. This isn't to say that you should skip checking the newspapers and internet for posted positions. Be sure to spend time as well staying in touch with your network and researching companies who would potentially have positions that interest you.
Walk into a professional building in your geographic area and take a look at the directory in the lobby. Write down the names of the companies listed and do some research. Once you obtain some information on a company of interest to you, go back to their office and call on them in person. Expect some rejection, but you might also make an impression and have the chance to talk with someone about possible openings.
Join your professional organization(s) and attend their meetings and events. This can be a really good way to meet people who might lead you to that perfect job.
A really good book to be familiar with is What Color is Your Parachute by Richard Bolles. This is an excellent guide to working in the hidden job market.
Be sure to stay registered with Victor eRecruiting. You aren't eligible to participate in on-campus recruiting once you graduate, but if a company receives your resume and wants to interview you they can put you on their schedule.
Resubscribe to the OM&IS Email Group (if you were using your NIU account) as any openings that come through the OM&IS Department will be posted there.
Remember that the OM&IS Meet the Firm is held each September. Check the OM&IS web page for specific dates and times. All current OM&IS students and alumni are welcome.
The OM&IS Department also puts out a eResume book each semester. There is always a section for Alumni. Contact Sue Goad (suegoad@niu.edu) to get your resume included.
Lastly, stay positive. Remember that rejection is part of the package when looking for a job. Keep your eyes on your goal!
