Job Search Tips Before Graduation

We recommend that you begin your search for a permanent position at least 9 months before you graduate. Here are a list of things to do, people to see, and places to go:

  1. Keep your resume updated. Revise it before the beginning of each semester. Always be looking for ways to make your resume better. You can get your resume critiqued at Career Services and by the OM&IS Advisor. The most important thing to remember is that the resume is YOURS. Understand any changes you are asked to make and be certain that those changes are adding value to your resume. Critiques are just that -- critiques. It is up to you what changes you actually make to your resume.
  2. Take the OMIS 300 class if you haven't already done so.
  3. Register with Victor eRecruiting. This service is available to you 24/7.
  4. Attend one of the orientation sessions for the On-Campus Recruiting Program which is run by Career Services. These orientation sessions are held the second and third week of each semester (except summer). The times are advertised on the messaging system in Barsema Hall, through the OM&IS Email Group, and in the Northern Star. Take advantage of all the companies who come to campus to interview.
  5. Submit your resume to the OM&IS eResume Book the semester that you will graduate. Contact Steve Kispert for more information.
  6. Join and be active in APICS (The Association for Operations Management) and/or AITP (Association of Information Technology Professionals). These organizations could be instrumental in building your network and in meeting company representatives outside of the Job Fair environment.
  7. Attend the OM&IS Meet the Firm held each September. This is advertised through the OM&IS Email Group and will be posted on the Barsema messaging system.
  8. Attend the Job Fairs held early each Fall and Spring semesters. These Fairs are organized by Career Services.
  9. Stay in touch with (and continue to develop) your network.
  10. Be proactive. Spend some time each day working towards finding a good job.
