The international fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi is a professional organization established to foster the study of business in universities. The co-ed fraternity focuses on professional development but is also involved socially and within the community. Activities range from resume writing and interviewing workshops, speakers, and tours, to informal gatherings and volunteer activities. The Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA) is a leading national professional association dedicated to enhancing opportunities for Latinos in the accounting, finance and related professions. ALPFA is open to professionals and students of all races and majors who share our values, mission, and principles. ALPFA NIU's purpose is to develop the professional skills of its members by providing activities and events that promote growth and personal development, build relationships with business professionals, as well as create awareness of the accounting and finance professions within our communities. This is accomplished by presentations from global business leaders, national networking conventions, mentorship programs, community service, and a variety of cultural/social events.

Beta Alpha Psi is a national honorary, scholastic, and professional accounting fraternity. The purpose of this organization is to promote the study and practice of accounting; to provide opportunities for self-development and association between members and practicing accountants; and to encourage a sense of ethical, social, and public responsibilities. Each semester the chapter arranges to have professionals give presentations on various aspects of the accounting profession. Other activities include tours of CPA firms, social events, community service activities, and opportunities to speak with people in the profession on a one-to-one basis. Students may pledge when they enroll in UBUS 310, if entrance requirements are met.

The Student Accountancy Society is a pre-professional organization sponsored by the Department of Accountancy. The purpose of SAS is to promote a professional interest and attitude toward the study of accounting; to encourage scholarship; to promote closer affiliation between the business world and the accountancy student; and to encourage active involvement in leadership roles. SAS seeks to aid its members in becoming the student leaders of today and the business leaders of tomorrow by encouraging members to actively participate in all areas of the organization and the Accountancy Department. SAS meets on Wednesday evenings at which time students have the opportunity to hear and to ask questions of representatives from the Accounting profession and other internationally respected business leaders. SAS is open to all declared Accountancy majors or students with other majors who are interested in learning more about leadership, the profession of Accountancy, and the business world.

The Financial Management Association is a student chapter of a nationally based organization. The mission of the FMA is to assist finance students in making the transition from students to professionals. The objectives of the organization are to ensure that all finance students obtain valuable career information, develop professional insights and attitudes, gain experience in problem solving and decision making, increase professional and faculty contacts, improve social and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate competence in skill areas beyond those needed to obtain a college degree. These objectives are met by encouraging social interaction between students, faculty, and businesses. Professional speakers, raising money for FMA, and community service are just a few activities available to the members of FMA.

The MSAB has been established through the Northern Illinois University governance policy and procedure for student involvement and participation in administrative affairs and matters impacting on student academic programs. The purposes of MSAB are (1) to adequately reflect and represent student views; (2) to advise the department on all matters in which students have substantial interest, (3) to develop and coordinate procedures to select faculty for excellence in teaching awards. Members of MSAB serve as liaisons between the department and Management majors. MSAB has also played a critical role in selecting faculty and students to be recognized at the department's annual awards banquet (including the department's representative for the Excellence in Teaching Award).

The national Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) is principally comprised of management students but also has members with majors in technology, psychology, mathematics, computer science and others. SAM offers a broad scope to those students ultimately pursuing careers in the general categories of administration and management. Benefits of campus SAM membership include: nine-month subscription to the SAM Advanced Management Journal, opportunity to compete with other SAM campus chapters, guest speakers, "no risk" opportunity to learn the latest in management theory and practice, awards banquets, and receipt of a membership certificate and card. The society is a national organization that operates under a board of directors and a president. Its officers work closely with the American Management Association. Its central aim is to provide professional encouragement and support, along with educational services, that enhance the field of management as a professional discipline both in terms of administrative theory and applied management performance for business and industry.

The Society for Human Resource Management is a professional organization sponsored by the Dept. of Management primarily for those students that are interested in careers in the field of Human Resource Management, including such areas as employee recruitment, training and development, compensation and benefits management, and labor relations. SHRM offers its members an assortment of activities throughout the academic year including speakers, plant tours, shadow-day programs, internship opportunities, and projects. SHRM-NIU is affiliated with the national SHRM and has supportive professional chapters in Chicago, Rockford and DeKalb County. Student members receive numerous publications from the national organization including HR Magazine. SHRM is open to all students with an active interest in the field of Human Resource Management.

As the “Unifying Voice for Advertising,” the American Advertising Federation (AAF) protects and promotes the well-being of advertising. The organization accomplishes this mission through a unique, nationally coordinated grassroots network of advertisers, agencies, media companies, local advertising clubs and college chapters. Membership is open to students interested in advertising and is not limited to business majors. NIU's AAF chapter arranges opportunities for students to interact with advertising professionals and seeks to provide the industry with future leaders. AAF honors advertising excellence and encourages diversity within the organization.

The American Marketing Association (AMA) is the world's leading professional student organization, whose goal is to further the professional development of students through leadership training and involvement in the field of marketing. Membership is open to students interested in marketing and is not limited to business majors. The NIU chapter consists of dynamic and committed students that have the need to benefit from personal involvement. Some of the programs include professional speakers, mock interviews, visits to Chicago-area corporations, and other events that expand knowledge and allow students to meet new people.

The Marketing Honor Society has four primary goals: (1) to recognize and honor undergraduate marketing students who have consistently demonstrated scholastic growth and attainment; (2) to provide a base by which current student members may make appropriate and productive contacts with business, government and academic communities; (3) to develop long-term relationships with NIU Marketing alumni; (4) to recognize and honor excellence in corporate achievement by business executives. MHS hosts presentations to high school students and their families during NIU open house each semester.

The Marketing Student Advisory Board holds its membership at 15 students. The general purpose of the MSAB is to advise the Dept. of Marketing by initiating specific suggestions on all important student matters and represent marketing students by serving as a channel of communication and source of information between the students and the department. Some specific activities the MSAB is involved in are administering faculty evaluations each semester, nominating a faculty member for the Excellence in Teaching Award, and various fundraising activities. MSAB also hosts the Marketing Awards Banquet and Graduation party in the spring.

Pi Sigma Epsilon is a professional sales and marketing organization open to both men and women of all majors. The basic philosophy is to give students real-world experience while still in school and allow the opportunity to apply what is learned in the classroom. There are opportunities to strengthen resume writing and interviewing skills while making contact with successful speakers and alumni. Students learn communication and social skills through the organization's environment. PSE has a membership of 60 students. New members are put into small groups and advised by two general members as they organize and implement their own sales or service project. The chapter is also affiliated with the Sales and Marketing Executives of Chicago. Once a month the group is invited to Chicago meetings that provide a valuable experience.

AITP is one of the largest professional organizations for individuals employed in the business information technology field. AITP encourages partnerships between industry, academia, and government for leadership and educational opportunities. The NIU student chapter sponsors events and speakers which feature current and up-coming information technology. In addition, the group co-sponsors events with the Student Advisory Board and APICS and participates in activities of the local professional chapter of AITP.

APICS, the Association for Operations Management, is an international organization for individuals engaged in professions related to service and manufacturing operations, resource allocation, forecasting, supply chain, etc. APICS is known for its certification programs, training tools, and networking opportunities. The student chapter of APICS sponsors speakers, tours, and a case competition team, and works in conjunction with the other student organizations. Members have the opportunity to attend meetings of the parent APICS chapter.

The OM&IS SAB enables students to be involved with the department on a more personal level. The SAB is the “student cabinet” of the department chair and provides important input regarding courses, processes, and department activities. The SAB performs a number of activities for the department, including promoting the OM&IS department to students throughout the university, producing the on-line newsletter, planning the Spring Awards Banquet, leading a community-service activity, nominating a faculty member for the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching award, and coordinating educational and social events with the other student organizations.
