 Week of July 1, 2002  Barsema Hall Prepares for Fall Opening
The completion of Barsema Hall is just weeks away and all business classes will be held in this new state-of-the-art facility this Fall. Construction has moved along at an incredible pace and the structure will be completed just 15 months after the initial site work began. Furniture, fixtures, and equipment are being installed this summer, and the building's official grand opening event is scheduled for September 23, 2002.

 Week of June 10, 2002  Halloran and Johnson Honored at Annual Luncheon
At the 12th Annual Alumni Luncheon held on May 3, 2002 at the Palmer House in Chicago, Kathleen Halloran (MBA, 1979) was awarded the 2002 College of Business Distinguished Alumni Award and Kenneth L. Johnson was awarded the 2002 College of Business Honorary Alumnus Award. Recipients are chosen based on business successes and contributions to the College of Business.

 Week of May 13, 2002  Outstanding Alumni Award
The NIU Alumni Association presented the College of Business Outstanding Alumni Award to Joseph Locke at the Alumni Awards Presentation Luncheon on April 10.

Joe Locke earned a B.S. in Management in 1968. Starting as a department manager at Sears Roebuck & Company, Locke's career has included positions as Senior Vice President of Marketing Services for All American Life Insurance Company, and President and CEO of American General Financial Institution Marketing Group. Currently, he is President and owner of Joseph J. Locke & Company, Ltd.

Joe Locke is a person who recognizes his blessings and feels fortunate to be able to give back. He participates in local government and is strongly committed to his church as a donor and leader and remains committed and loyal to NIU. He was a founding member of the Marketing Department Advisory Board, has been a College of Business Commencement Speaker, has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the NIU Executive Club, and, with his wife Lauren, funded the refurbishment of a classroom in Wirtz Hall. He is also instrumental in the fundraising for the NIU Executive Club Endowed Scholarship as chair of the dinner dance committee.

Speaking about Locke's contributions to the College, Dean David Graf said, "I can attest to the huge amount of time and energy he generously provides the College of Business both with his generous financial support and his leadership and assistance to the College. We are proud Joseph J. Locke is an alumnus of NIU's College of Business."

 Week of April 29, 2002  Using Viewlets
Sue Anderson, College of Business Instructional Technology Coordinator, is demonstrating ViewletBuilder at the Information Technology Services meeting for technical support personnel. This meeting will be held Thursday, May 9, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon in Holmes Student Center Room 306 and is open to all Customer Support Services training personnel and other campus support personnel.

ViewletBuilder is being used at the College of Business to explain how software applications work. Several viewlets have been developed by Sue Anderson and are available on the Technology Resources Website. An example is located at www.cob.niu.edu/technology/.

On Wednesday, May 1, 2002 a COB Spring Fling is being held for the benefit of students, faculty and staff. From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. hotdogs, chips, cookies, & beverage will be served at the front (west) entrance of Wirtz Hall.

This event is sponsored by the College of Business, Staff Council, Wal-Mart (cookies) , Enterprise-Rent-A-Car (frisbees), and McDonald's (orange drink).

 Week of April 1, 2002  Barsema Hall Construction Update
Construction of Barsema Hall continues at a brisk pace. Exterior masonry is the major outside project while inside work continues on finishing walls, running electrical and telecommunications cable, and installing ceilings. Ideal weather conditions and excellent project management has kept construction zooming along. Specifications and bids for interior furniture, fixtures, and equipment are the current major focus along with faculty and staff planning for their big move.

Six dynamic cross-functional teams will compete in the only Northern Illinois University College of Business case competition. This event is the second annual Business Day.  Week of January 28, 2002  New Marketing Chair
The College of Business is pleased to announce that Dr. Denise Schoenbachler has been appointed to a four year term as Chair of the Marketing Department effective February 1, 2002. Denise will be replacing Dr. Peter Kaminski who will retire on January 31. Denise received her Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Kentucky and joined NIU in 1992.

Denise's primary research interests are in database marketing and multi-channel marketing. In addition to her research, teaching, and administrative duties, Denise is actively involved in the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation and the Chicago Association of Direct Marketing. She is also the OTA/Off the Record Research Professor of Marketing Research, which is a named professorship.

 Week of January 14, 2002  New OMIS Chair
The College of Business is pleased to announce that Dr. Nancy L. Russo has been appointed Chair of the Operations Management and Information Systems Department effective January 1, 2002, replacing Dr. Bill Tallon who became associate dean of the college. Nancy received her Ph.D. in management information systems from Georgia State University and joined NIU in 1991. Before receiving her appointment as chair of the department, she served as Assistant Chair and Acting Chair of the OMIS Department.

In addition to her research, teaching, and administrative duties, Nancy is actively involved in the international information systems community and in 1998 was a Visiting Professor at University College Cork, Ireland. She is an Associate Editor of the Information Systems Journal, and serves on the editorial board of Information Technology & People and Information Systems Review.

 Week of October 22, 2001  Chartered Financial Analyst Designation
The AIMR Board of Governors has awarded Dick Dowen the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. Earning this charter required a dedicated effort over a minimum of three years to pass three six-hour examinations covering a globally relevant Body of Knowledge set by an international council of investment-industry leaders.

Dr. Dowen began his career in the Finance Department at Northern Illinois University on August 16, 1983. He served as Acting Chair for the department from July 1, 2000, through June 30, 2001. The College of Business is proud to announce that its undergraduate program in Accountancy climbed 7 positions in CPA Personnel Report's annual ranking of programs nationwide. NIU's program is now tied for 13th place having moved ahead of many programs this past year. Workers began placing the steel supports for Barsema Hall this week giving the building vertical as well as horizontal definition. Dry weather continues to help keep the construction on schedule. As you read a few weeks back, construction of Barsema Hall is underway. Now you can watch the building process live, via a webcam aimed to capture all the activity. You can also get the rest of the building details such as floor plans, a site plan, and the story behind the building by going to the Barsema Hall web page. Bookmark the webcam page so that you can easily check-in on the building's progress.
 Week of June 4, 2001  New College Server
After faithfully hosting the College of Business web site for the past 5 years, the HP 9000 minicomputer is being retired. The college's web site is now hosted by a Windows 2000 server running Microsoft's IIS. This change will open up new opportunities on our web site including greater choices for scripting, database-driven pages, and the like. If you have yet to develop a web page and are a College of Business faculty, staff, or student, please email cobtech@niu.edu to find out how to get a site started.

Business Outreach, formerly known as Continuing Professional Education in Business, has recast themselves in the important and challenging role as the gateway to the College of Business for external stakeholders.  Week of May 14, 2001  Associate Dean Announcement
Dr. Bill Tallon (btallon@niu.edu) was recently appointed to a 6-year term as the new associate dean for the College of Business effective July 1, 2001. Bill came to NIU in 1990 as an assistant professor in the Operations Management and Information Systems department (www.cob.niu.edu/omis). In 1992 he became chair of the department and has led the department through a period of strong growth and success, which included the graduate program being ranked twice by Computerworld as one of the top 25 techno MBA programs. As associate dean, his leadership and management skills will play an important role with the upcoming reaccreditation of the college as well as the move to Barsema Hall (www.cob.niu.edu/barsema), the new home for the College of Business.

 Week of March 26, 2001  Groundbreaking Ceremony for Barsema Hall
The College of Business officially broke ground for the construction of Barsema Hall. In a spectacular ground display, the construction of Barsema Hall officially was celebrated on March 23, 2001. Barsema Hall will be the new home for the College of Business beginning in Fall 2002. Thanks to the generosity of Dennis and Stacey Barsema, the college will have the largest and most technologically advanced classroom building on NIU's campus.  Week of March 5, 2001  NIU Executive Club's Angel Network
NIU's Executive Club, a 150-member organization of alumni from across the university, has launched the Angel Network to support entrepreneurship activities of NIU graduates. The network could give from $200,000 to $500,000 and mentoring to entrepreneurs who might not have other avenues to turn to for support.  Week of February 26, 2001  Wirtz Auditorium Renovation Update
The renovation of the Wirtz Auditorium continues to move along and is right on schedule. At this point all the chairs, tables, floor tile, lighting, and projection booth have all been removed. New drywall and painting should be completed by mid March and during this time (and beyond) the electricians are rewiring the auditorium and installing new light fixtures. Floor tiling is the next big phase and then the new seating. The auditorium is scheduled to reopen for Fall 2001 classes. The $300,000 renovation is being jointly funded by: a gift in honor of Cliff Danielson from the National Bank and Trust Company of Sycamore, the CPA Review, the Executive MBA, the College of Business, and NIU. The new auditorium will increase the seating capacity to 324 seats and provide dramatic improvements in lighting, comfort, as well as technology.
