NIU Holiday Closure
The College of Business offices will be closed December 24, 2004 through January 2, 2005. For students, classes begin the week of January 18, 2005.

Mr. Trump's Kudos to NIU: 200 Million and Counting
THE DONALD, Mr. Trump himself, placed NIU's College of Business on the national stage during his September 20, 2004 radio show TrumpOnAir, a daily radio broadcast airing over 400 radio stations across the country. From Mr. Trump's generous acknowledgement about the college and its Marketing Apprentice class, additional publicity followed. The additional coverage--as recently as November 9--includes reports in the Associated Press, Singapore Press, Canadian Press, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, USA Today, CNN Fox-TV, New York Post, Yahoo!, AOL, EarthLink, MSNBC.com among countless other media outlets.

To date, the audience reach from this publicity exceeds 200 million people around the country and the world who have learned about NIU's College of Business. (See the COB Highlights "In the News" for a partial list of media coverage garnered to date.)

Finance Professors Generate National Media Attention
"Don't Worry About the Election, Just Watch the Fed," written by NIU Finance professors and a CFA Institute member, is the title of a paper that discusses the impact of political cycles and the stock market. The paper has been covered by several major media outlets, including: SmartMoney magazine (November 2004) and CBS stations across the country (from New York to California).

Previously, "Don't Worry About the Election, Just Watch the Fed" was the subject of an Associated Press article, which was subsequently picked up in more than 110 papers around the world as well as in major print publications. Congratulations to Finance professors Gerald Jensen and Scott Beyer and CFA Senior Vice President Robert Johnson who collaborated on and co-authored this important paper.

Marketing Apprentice Course Gets Media Attention
The Marketing Apprentice course, modelled after "The Apprentice" television program and offered out of the college's Marketing Department, continues to receive great print and televised media coverage: WBBM-AM (Chicago) (August 31, 2004 airing); The Elgin Courier (August 30, 2004 edition); The Aurora Beacon (September 2, 2004 edition); The Daily Herald (September 9, 2004 front page of its business section and also on their website www.dailyherald.com/search/main_story.asp?intID=38239137); WIFR-TV Rockford (September 9, 2004 televised interview); Daily Chronicle (September 14, 2004 edition and also on their website www.daily-chronicle.com/articles/2004/09/14/neighbors/neighbors01.txt; Ottawa Daily Times (September 15, 2004); NBC-affiliate WREX-TV Rockford (September 16, 2004 televised interview in Barsema Hall).

The Marketing Apprentice course was created through a collaboration between NIU COB students and Marketing Department Chair Denise Schoenbachler along with Marketing Apprentice professors Dr. Carol DeMoranville and Dr. Elisa Fredericks. Illinois CPA Society EXCEL Award Recipients
Four NIU CPA Review candidates who successfully passed the November 2003 exam were honored on Monday, May 3 at the Illinois CPA Society Awards Banquet held at the Chicago Hilton. To be eligible to receive the EXCEL Award, Illinois candidates must have finished within the top 120 nationally and achieved a score of 80 or above on all sections of the exam. In addition to achieving a score of 80 or above on all secions of the exam, EXCEL Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards are granted to the top scoring Illinois candidates who finish within the top 120 nationally.

Allstate Corporation Celebrates Its Room Naming in Barsema Hall
Allstate Corporation representatives Jon Young, Corey Luecht, Karleen Zuzich, Steve Scholl, and Jon Salvani visited NIU's Barsema Hall on Tuesday, May 11 to select the classroom that will bear the Allstate Corporation name. Allstate Corporation joins a growing number of NIU's corporate and individual partners who are taking advantage of the room naming opportunities in Barsema Hall.

Barsema Outdoor Clean-up Day Successful!
On Wednesday, April 28, 2004, over 40 staff, faculty, and students donated their time to weed and to pick up trash and cigarette butts around the grounds of Barsema Hall. Refreshments were served in the atrium afterwards to all the workers.

We wish to thank everyone who lent a helping hand and showed their Barsema Pride!

Barsema Hall Cleanup Day
Faculty, staff, and students of the College of Business held their first Barsema Hall Cleanup Day on Wednesday, December 17, 2003. Everyone pitched in to do some thorough cleaning of the office suites and then enjoyed pizza provided by the Dean afterwards. The willingness of everyone to volunteer for this is yet another example of the pride we have in our great facility.
