Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund - A Message from the Dean of the College of Business
NIU students out of the auspices of the Northern Star have set up donation tables throughout campus to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Every day this week -- from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. -- NIU students will be stationed at a donation table in the Barsema Hall atrium (east side) to collect donations. If you choose to donate, the students will collect funds in the form of cash or checks. 100% of funds collected will be directed to the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross will then use the funds in its relief efforts to help those whose lives were devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

If you are able, I hope you will give a donation toward this extremely important effort. Today, on the first day of this fundraising effort, I have found it heartwarming to see many students dig deep and give cash ... we all remember those days when we were students and/or when cash was not so readily available.

Please tell your students and faculty and staff colleagues about this fundraising effort. And this week, if you have the means, please give generously to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. (Donation table located in the BH atrium, east side, from 9:00-3:00).

Thank you.

Dr. William Tallon
Dean

NIU Business Professors -- Raising the Bar
Northern's business professors continue to earn recognition for their teaching, research, and community service activities. Most recently, NIU faculty in Finance, Marketing, and Management have been recognized for the following:

Gerald Jensen, Professor of Finance, John Banko, Assistant Professor of Finance, and University of Richmond Finance Professor Mitch Conover co-authored a research paper entitled "The Relationship between the Value Effect and Industry Affiliation." This paper discusses value investing and the interrelationship between the higher historical returns (known as "value effect") produced by firms and the industry in which a firm operates. The authors' paper has been accepted for 2006 publication by The Journal of Business, which is published and produced by the University of Chicago press. The Journal of Business publishes only the highest quality papers in all business disciplines. This paper represents the first NIU paper ever accepted for publication in University of Chicago's The Journal of Business.

Denise Schoenbachler, OTA/Off the Record Research Professor of Marketing, Geoffrey Gordon, OTA/Off the Record Research Professor of Marketing, and Tim Aurand, Associate Professor of Marketing, won the Emerald Insight Literati Club 2005 Outstanding Paper Award for their co-authored research paper entitled "Building Brand Loyalty through Individual Stock Ownership." The paper was published in The Journal of Product and Brand Management (November 2004).

Courtney Hunt, Assistant Professor of Management, was elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society (OBTS). As the recognized leader for 31 years in teaching and learning in management disciplines, OBTS publishes the Journal of Management Education, hosts Doctoral Initiatives for Ph.D. students, and holds several regional conferences.

APICS Student Organization Wins Regional Case Competition
American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) Student Organization Members: Erica Creen, Brandon Dirksen, Parveen Usman, and Heath Wood. These APICS student members--all OMIS majors--won the 10th Annual APICS Regional Student Case Competition held on Saturday, February 5, 2005. The case involved a Midwestern manufacturing plant of a large automotive parts supplier where performance lagged and the plant faced possible closure. The student teams created and presented their recommendations to save the plant from closure in the face of time and resource constraints. Facing their own time constraints, the student teams had only from 9:00 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday to create their solutions and finalize their presentations. On Saturday, all student teams presented their solutions to more than 200 conference attendees and a panel of APICS judges.

The NIU APICS chapter members won first place competing against 13 APICS student chapters from schools such as University of Illinois, Ball State University, University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, and University of Houston. NIU's APICS faculty advisor is OMIS professor Dr. Charles Petersen.
