Faculty at NIU's College of Business are highly regarded thought-leaders, who are often quoted in the media or whose expertise is sought by major organizations. Many of our faculty have received teaching awards at the departmental, college, and university levels, including the prestigious NIU Presidential Teaching Award. Unlike faculty at other schools around the country, the majority of NIU's business faculty worked as business professionals before earning their PhDs. NIU business students learn from faculty who have been in the trenches, who understand business fundamentals, and who also explore best business practices...both existing and emerging. Such enduring commitment to meld theory and action -- and to provide opportunities for learners to put business concepts into practice -- has caused the college to be known as a place Where the Classroom Meets the Business World .

Mark Rosenbaum, Assistant Professor of Marketing, is a recipient of the David W. Raymond Grant. Created by, and named after, one of the first members of the NIU Board of Trustees, the grant offsets costs associated with introducing new technologies in the classroom. Some of those new technologies allow Rosenbaum to package lecture and video material in such a way that his students can access the material online (stopping the lecture at any point to email questions) or download lectures to their iPods. In spring 2007, Nicole D'Ambrosio (B.S. Marketing 2003) hit the bright lights of L.A. and competed in season 6 of Donald Trump's "The Apprentice" television show. Nicole did NIU proud by going the distance and making it to the season's finale. D'Ambrosio graduated from NIU with a degree in marketing. The Naperville native financed her entire NIU education on her own, working two or three jobs at a time to make ends meet. Not only did she manage to graduate with honors, she also found time to earn an associate degree and a certificate in real estate at Kishwaukee College. With her NIU degree in hand she founded Commercial Real Estate Corporation in Chicago, which specializes in large acquisitions of commercial real estate. She not only runs the company but also manages a portfolio of properties valued at more than $1 million. Approximately 180 College of Business faculty, staff and their families had a wonderful time at the 2nd Annual College of Business picnic on August 19th. The picnic was held indoors this year because of the rain, but it didn't put a damper on the fun. The 180 individuals included 53 children this year! The children enjoyed the "goodie bags" and games.
Our thanks to Lenita Hepker and Connie Weaver, without whose help the picnic could not have been possible.

The college's Department of Operations Management and Information Systems (OM&IS) is very pleased to announce that Charles Downing has been named the Wal-Mart Professor in Enterprise Technology Innovation. Wal-Mart has partnered with the OM&IS Department because of its strong academic program that combines information systems with the operations management function, unusual in an undergraduate program.
As a scholar-teacher, Charles Downing teaches, researches, and consults in topics such as information technology as a business process integrator (supply chain and portals), business intelligence, and measuring the effectiveness of information systems. Professor Downing has received a number of teaching excellence awards. His research has been published in top-tier academic journals such as Decision Sciences, Decision Support Systems, Information & Management, among others. Downing received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. His academic tenure includes serving as Associate Professor at Boston College prior to his current appointment in the OM&IS Department at the Northern Illinois University College of Business.
In the business arena, Downing possesses significant experience as an information technology consultant in the financial services industry. Prior to earning his Ph.D., Downing served as national director of Ernst & Young's microcomputer and telecommunication systems in the firm's Defined Contribution Services Group. And as an independent consultant, Downing designed, programmed, and implemented telephone interactive voice response systems for Chicago Title and Trust, among other companies.
