Operations Management and Information Systems Careers and Internships

Studying OM&IS prepares you to effectively address supply chain issues, implement data analytics and manage information technology. Our graduates work at a wide variety of organizations, including:

  • Allstate Insurance Company
  • CME Group
  • Hormel Foods
  • Motorola Mobility Inc.
  • Rush University Medical Center

There are many steps you can take before graduation to line up your ideal career, and we'll help you along the way.

Building Your Network

To learn more about possible positions and employers, speak with your professors and those working in the field. Other ways to expand your professional network include:

  • Joining a student organization.
  • Participating in Business Passport.
  • Attending OM&IS Meet the Firm Night to interact with companies that hire our graduates.
  • Volunteering your talents/skills. For example, if you're interested in web design, you could create a website for a company or organization.
  • Joining a professional organization, such as the NIU chapter of the Association for Operations Management or the Association of Information Technology Professionals.

Internships

Internships are one of the most effective ways to prepare for a career. They give you hands-on experience, enhance your resume and help you make connections in the field. It's also possible to get academic credit for an internship.

Companies recruiting NIU students for jobs and internships post openings on Huskies Get Hired. Register on the site and check it regularly for new leads.

Micro-internships

You can also complete a micro-internship. These paid short-term projects take place over one to four weeks and require varying hours.

Testimonial

When I found myself on the NIU campus a few years ago, I saw more than enough opportunities to prove my leadership abilities through student organizations. In addition to those social opportunities, NIU prioritized my education and my personal growth. As an operations management and information systems (OM&IS) major, I relied on faculty and staff to help me find a career path that would fit me best.
