Python Programmer Boot Camp

The Python programming language is one of the most popular programming languages for data science. While numerous software packages are available for data analytics, data scientist are limited to features provided by the software package. Python is a general-purpose, high-level programming language that can efficiently perform tasks which may require use of multiple software packages. Widely used in the industry, Python has excellent open source libraries, high performance interpreters, editors, and parsers to work with different data formats.

Purpose and Benefit

Each session will include discussion of topics, demo, and hands-on exercises. Participants are required to complete exercises individually. Instructor and student volunteers will be available for help and feedback. Exercises require participants to use Python and related concepts on real data and analytics problems which are frequently encountered in projects. The Python programming skills acquired in this boot camp should allow a participant to (a) learn advanced Python programming, (b) complete course assignments and projects, and (c) use Python programming skills in various tasks such as industry collaboration projects and internships.

The Python Programming Boot Camp is designed to (a) develop the ability to analyze and identify key programming elements for an analytics project, (b) develop basic programming skills, (c) introduce useful Python packages, and (d) practice Python programming skills acquired in this boot camp on commonly encountered scenarios in data analytics projects. Some of the topics included in the boot camp are:

  • Python setup using PyCharm and Python 3, install and update packages
  • Python programming syntax
  • Programming basics such as condition, loops, and control statements
  • Common and advanced data structures such as integer, string, list, dictionary, and dataframe
  • Common built-in functions
  • Accessing and manipulating data files in Comma Separated Values (CSV) and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) formats
  • Visualization using the Matplotlib package
  • Manipulate relational databases from Python environment

Prerequisites for the Boot Camp

None.  Participants are required to bring their own device to develop Python programs.

The boot camp does not provide lunch or refreshments.
