Business in Action

Through UBUS 110: Business in Action, you'll learn basic business content and professional skills while translating that knowledge into action. Business in Action courses places you into small teams to consult on business issues for real organizations. Along the way, you'll define problems, research issues, and develop and deliver business recommendations to your clients, all skills applicable to your future career.

Students

Business in Action courses are taught by experienced business leaders. You will:

  • Learn basic business concepts and terminology.
  • Discover how the functional areas of business work together to add to an organization's success.
  • Apply the NIU BELIEF ethics decision-making guide.
  • Work in a small team to research, develop, and present innovative solutions to business challenges to organization leaders.
  • Set and reflect on progress toward academic and professional goals.

Business in Action consulting teams have assisted early start-ups, small and local businesses, non-profits and established franchisees in these areas and many others:

  • Sales and marketing channel assessment.
  • Cost structure and break-even analysis.
  • Employee turnover reduction.
  • Mitigating the impact of the minimum wage increase.
  • Formalization of accounting systems and report generation.

Business In Action Faculty

Business in Action instructors are shaping the future of business. They bring years of business experience to the classroom as they guide and mentor students at the beginning of their NIU journeys.

Jason Gorham

Jason Gorham has a doctorate in business administration with an emphasis in leadership. Gorham is the director of business consulting and the director of the Experiential Learning Center in the College of Business. He brings decades of experience, including organizational leadership, development and implementation of experiential programming and project management to the Business in Action class students.

Jacie Collum

Jacie Collum is director of the College of Business Passport Program, which is designed to encourage student engagement in a variety of experiences to broaden students' horizons in the business world. She additionally coaches Experiential Learning Center teams at the College of Business.

Neil Doughty

Building Ethical Leaders using an Integrated Ethics Framework (BELIEF) Ethics Program Director Neil Doughty is himself an NIU Alumnus ('81) and brings nearly 15 years of C-Level Executive experience to Business in Action from his time at ISI Telemanagement and Two Rivers Conferencing. His work directing BELIEF and Leaders in Ethics and Academic Discipline (LEAD) incorporates into his Business in Action courses, examining business decisions through an ethical lens.

Scott Rosenfelder

NIU Alumnus Scott Rosenfelder ('85) brings a varied background to Business in Action from an extensive career in the business world. After starting his career in software development at Motorola, Rosenfelder founded his own company, ClearPoint Technologies, which focused on development of an Association Management Software supporting some of the country's largest non-profits. Rosenfelder's company was later acquired by the Big Four accounting firm Deloitte in 2001. Rosenfelder spent the next 20+ years leading multiple service lines as a partner/managing director. Rosenfelder specialized in assisting his clients in the strategy and implementation of advanced data analytics to support and improve their business. Upon retirement from Deloitte, Rosenfelder has joined the College of Business with a focus on bringing his consulting experiences to Business in Action.

Jenny Redisi

Bringing over 30 years of experience in the business world to her students in Business in Action, NIU alumna Jenny Redisi ('91) has worked for companies such as NCR Corporation and Microsoft. She has had extensive experience in training and consulting in sales and sales management, becoming a Gallup Certified Strengths coach in 2019. In addition to instructing students and coaching them to maximize their talents, she has coached businesses such as Cintas and Creeden to improve their performance by leveraging their innate strengths. Redisi also brings an entrepreneurial background to BIA, having founded and managed Café Roma, a restaurant specializing in catering corporate events and providing full-service dining to business professionals.

Elois Joseph

NIU MBA Alumna Elois Joseph ('15) brings over 20 years of experience in the financial sector to her Business In Action courses, and is co-founder of the Greenwood Project, a nonprofit dedicated to introducing students from under-resourced communities to careers within the financial services industry.
